Ezra’s Laboratory

Ezra’s Laboratory is another element of the most recent Story Portal installation. The main character in our narrative, Dr. Ezra Marcel, is a brilliant scientist who has found himself marooned on an island. As he lay dying for nearly a month next to his crashed airship, a mystical blue fairy suddenly arrives and feeds him a potion. This magical creature whispers in Ezra’s ear, “the only place to find this potion is from inside the mouth of a dragon.” The moment Ezra consumes this potion, his wounds are healed and he emerges into a psychedelic world, full of ideas for invention. As quickly as the magical fairy arrived, he disappears.

Dr. Marcel can’t shake the experience of the fairy. He becomes obsessed with reconnecting with them however he can. He builds a make shift laboratory to find a way to capture the magic of him. He hunts the island far and wide, to no avail. He captures an abundance of different fairies, but none are the fairy he is looking for. He studies these but ultimately places them in cages, curiosity jars and the rubbish bin in his laboratory.

When not seeking his elusive fairy, he diligently works in his lab to concoct the dragon’s mouth potion. He builds a giant steampunk robot, Big Charles, who serves as his dragon slayer. With a dragon now slain by Big C, he is able to devise a formula for an endless supply. He soon becomes addicted to the powerful psychedelic. In order to increase its effects, Ezra develops an electrified chair that pumps this substance, that he now depends on for survival, directly into his mind.

Ezra descends into madness, lost in his distorted mind, psychedelic universe and obsession with his nowhere to be found fairy.
